The scenic 1,000-acre Fort Lincoln State Park has abundant historical sites relating to both early Native American and 19th century American military history. Located less than 10 miles south of Mandan next to the Missouri River, the park also has scenic hiking trails and offers campsites for overnight guests. The reconstructed Mandan On-a-Slant Village contains reconstructed buildings, and tour guides describe the history of the culture that occupied the area since the 1500s. Fort Abraham Lincoln has been reconstructed to appear as it did in 1875 and contains the house of General Custer, a barracks and the 7th Cavalry Stable.
